Whenever a major artist dies, there’s an initial media blitz where you have a ton of people talking about everything except the music. You know, those people who watch cable news for 3 hours a day. Eventually, those people find something else to talk about, usually a sex scandal or someone winning American Idol.
But even after the story’s buzz dies out, the music-lovers continue to carry the torch. Even though Michael Jackson isn’t front page news anymore, artists continue to pay tribute.
With He’s The King, I’m The DJ, DJ Jazzy Jeff runs through Jackson’s greatest moments and also throws in some rare remixes. Yes, Michael Jackson is synonymous with controversy, but take an hour to remember why his death shook the planet. He made timeless music. ~metallungies.com

An excellent set of tripped-out funk — the first full length release from Didier’s Sound System, a group with the same smoke-addled sound as the Poets of Rhythm! The core groove of the Didier combo is a slow funk approach, coupled with a bit of dub — all of which means that the instrumentation gets nice and muddy, tripping in a laidback way around the beats and basslines, with sweet solos on trombone, sax, trumpet, and Fender Rhodes. The set’s got a wonderful sound that’s equally pleasing in the club or kicking back at home, and is a refreshing change from some of the “too classic” funk groups on the market these days. ~dustygroove.com

Having long since shed their image as hip-hop’s clown princes, the Beastie Boys now bring what feels like their emeritus recording, a celebratory instrumental memoir of all of the influences (except punk) that brought them to their secure place among hip-hop’s fickle elite. The party opens with the aptly titled “B for My Name,” its plodding bounce staking claim to the mid-tempo path the album treads almost throughout. “14th St. Break” picks up the pace, especially in the auxiliary percussion breakdown, complete with rally whistle. Then, beginning with “Suco de Tangerina,” the album drops into a deep groove cut from dub- and dancehall-tinged ostinati that carry through a full third of its tracks. Among these, “The Gala Event” suffers from a lack of developmental motion that characterizes many of these tracks, but highlights still abound. “Off the Grid,” for example, departs from the otherwise unbreakable chill and rips the proceedings wide open, blooming again and again in a series of pulsing riffs that celebrate the very institution of the instrumental groove. More than 20 years since Licensed to Ill took a long, irreverent piss into the mainstream, it seems you can still fight for your right to party. –Jason Kirk

Jazzman records continues its quest to uncover the best and rarest Funk ever recorded, and after the success of last year’s ‘Florida Funk’, we’ve moved up the Atlantic coast to look at the vibrant and original scene in the two rural states of North and South Carolina – collectively known as the Carolinas.
Bordering the Bible belt, the Carolinas share the hidebound reputation of neighbouring Tenessee – and without any large urban centres, much of the musical output of the Carolinas has been limited to single towns, with bands and their records seldom venturing further than the state line. Funk 45 label boss Jazzman Gerald and resident North Carolina collector Jason Perlmutter have selected 22 of the rarest and most coveted examples of heavy funk from the Atlantic Coast to show the world there is more to the Carolinas than tobacco plantations and venus fly traps! From inspired percussive instrumentals to heartfelt slabs of soul; from rediscovered tapes in the garages of retired musicians to funk 45s so raw that they were blessed by James Brown himself – this is Carolina Funk!
