cover

An excellent set of tripped-out funk — the first full length release from Didier’s Sound System, a group with the same smoke-addled sound as the Poets of Rhythm! The core groove of the Didier combo is a slow funk approach, coupled with a bit of dub — all of which means that the instrumentation gets nice and muddy, tripping in a laidback way around the beats and basslines, with sweet solos on trombone, sax, trumpet, and Fender Rhodes. The set’s got a wonderful sound that’s equally pleasing in the club or kicking back at home, and is a refreshing change from some of the “too classic” funk groups on the market these days. ~dustygroove.com

Beastie Boys – The Mix-Up (2007)

Posted by admin in Funk, Rock, Soul

beastieboysthemixupfronxm0

Having long since shed their image as hip-hop’s clown princes, the Beastie Boys now bring what feels like their emeritus recording, a celebratory instrumental memoir of all of the influences (except punk) that brought them to their secure place among hip-hop’s fickle elite. The party opens with the aptly titled “B for My Name,” its plodding bounce staking claim to the mid-tempo path the album treads almost throughout. “14th St. Break” picks up the pace, especially in the auxiliary percussion breakdown, complete with rally whistle. Then, beginning with “Suco de Tangerina,” the album drops into a deep groove cut from dub- and dancehall-tinged ostinati that carry through a full third of its tracks. Among these, “The Gala Event” suffers from a lack of developmental motion that characterizes many of these tracks, but highlights still abound. “Off the Grid,” for example, departs from the otherwise unbreakable chill and rips the proceedings wide open, blooming again and again in a series of pulsing riffs that celebrate the very institution of the instrumental groove. More than 20 years since Licensed to Ill took a long, irreverent piss into the mainstream, it seems you can still fight for your right to party. –Jason Kirk

Carolina Funk - (2007)

Jazzman records continues its quest to uncover the best and rarest Funk ever recorded, and after the success of last year’s ‘Florida Funk’, we’ve moved up the Atlantic coast to look at the vibrant and original scene in the two rural states of North and South Carolina – collectively known as the Carolinas.
Bordering the Bible belt, the Carolinas share the hidebound reputation of neighbouring Tenessee – and without any large urban centres, much of the musical output of the Carolinas has been limited to single towns, with bands and their records seldom venturing further than the state line. Funk 45 label boss Jazzman Gerald and resident North Carolina collector Jason Perlmutter have selected 22 of the rarest and most coveted examples of heavy funk from the Atlantic Coast to show the world there is more to the Carolinas than tobacco plantations and venus fly traps! From inspired percussive instrumentals to heartfelt slabs of soul; from rediscovered tapes in the garages of retired musicians to funk 45s so raw that they were blessed by James Brown himself – this is Carolina Funk!

SoulShaker Vol. 2 (2005)

Posted by admin in Funk, Soul

SoulShaker Vol. 2 (2005)

Get your dance-floor shoes ready as another long ride through the world’s groovy funk & soul club scene awaits you. Get started with The Voodoo Trombone Quartet and Lemon, quintessence of London’s legendary Club Montepulciano, here dealing with an overwhelming and breathtaking cocktail Latin “breakbeat” Boogaloo, followed by the similar Kelvin Stardust, the opening track of Big Boss Man’s brand new second album “Winner”. Pass the hatchet baby!!! Let’s stay in the realm of groovy club soundz with Gogo Sitar by Germany’s Kahuna Kawentzmann, which already became a true underground hit thanks to the bootlegging of 7” by Jazzman Records, the same label that publishes the flaming Sharon Jackson and her Soul Destroyers. Blow your top! Quantic is among the leading figures of the new international club scene. “Don’t joke with an Hungry Man’ man proves that this is a top class young talent, indeed in this case helped by the voice of the legendary Spanky Wilson! English band Speedometer deliver a preview taken from their second album “This is Speedometer vol.2”, which states all the je ne sais quoi of these Southeast boys. “Have you got the message”?!! The best of nowadays’ mod scene is embodied by Scottish band Boogaloo Investigators, by Italy’s Link Quartet, featured with the previously unreleased song Sweet little apples, by American band Diplomats of Solid Sound and by the Nick Rossi Set, respectively dealing with Loaf and jug and with the cover of Foolkiller by Mose Allison. Sharon Jones – who only just delivered a sold out performance at Camden’s Jazz Café – certainly doesn’t need to be introduced, as she is beyond question the number one lady of soul. What condition, which already became a classic of the northern soul scene thanks to the version by Betty Lavette, is an unreleased track that, at present, has been turning only on 7”. In order to remain within the classics, French band Slow Slushi Boys have no fear of comparison with Ike Turner. Just listen to their song “I can’t believe what you say”. And, what should we say about the hot Hammond-funk played by English band Sting Ray Davies & The Organites, a side project by Leight Gracie of Speedometer and Stoned Soul Picnic!!!???!! Wow! ~ recordkicks.ithinkmusic.com
