International Battle Of The Year – The Soundtrack (2008)

Since the first branch hits another piece of wood, two stones are banging against each other or people just simply clapping their hands together to create some sound people are always moving their bodies to these sounds. Dance was born! First to tell stories from tribe to tribe, to heal diseases, to entertain the ancient gods or even to get ready for a war. A war dance, such as the Kailao, the samoan Fire knife or the Haka are dances involving mock combat, usually in reference to tribal warrior sicieties where such dances were performed as a ritual connected with endemic warfare. For this kind of dances, music was and is always an important thing nowadays in our western society there is still a noble warrior society existing who like to perform their dance routines in a battle man against man, or better known as a BBoy against a BBoy or B Girl against B Girl. With this soundtrack Battle of the Year is presenting you a fine selection of B Boy trakcs which fits just right to push you and your crew to the next level. Whether it is in a battle, in the cyphers or your next solo in the showcase we are pretty sure you can find some suitable songs on this album to burn your combatant or to inspire the crowd. SoulShaker Vol. 2 (2005)

Get your dance-floor shoes ready as another long ride through the world’s groovy funk & soul club scene awaits you. Get started with The Voodoo Trombone Quartet and Lemon, quintessence of London’s legendary Club Montepulciano, here dealing with an overwhelming and breathtaking cocktail Latin “breakbeat” Boogaloo, followed by the similar Kelvin Stardust, the opening track of Big Boss Man’s brand new second album “Winner”. Pass the hatchet baby!!! Let’s stay in the realm of groovy club soundz with Gogo Sitar by Germany’s Kahuna Kawentzmann, which already became a true underground hit thanks to the bootlegging of 7” by Jazzman Records, the same label that publishes the flaming Sharon Jackson and her Soul Destroyers. Blow your top! Quantic is among the leading figures of the new international club scene. “Don’t joke with an Hungry Man’ man proves that this is a top class young talent, indeed in this case helped by the voice of the legendary Spanky Wilson! English band Speedometer deliver a preview taken from their second album “This is Speedometer vol.2”, which states all the je ne sais quoi of these Southeast boys. “Have you got the message”?!! The best of nowadays’ mod scene is embodied by Scottish band Boogaloo Investigators, by Italy’s Link Quartet, featured with the previously unreleased song Sweet little apples, by American band Diplomats of Solid Sound and by the Nick Rossi Set, respectively dealing with Loaf and jug and with the cover of Foolkiller by Mose Allison. Sharon Jones – who only just delivered a sold out performance at Camden’s Jazz Café – certainly doesn’t need to be introduced, as she is beyond question the number one lady of soul. What condition, which already became a classic of the northern soul scene thanks to the version by Betty Lavette, is an unreleased track that, at present, has been turning only on 7”. In order to remain within the classics, French band Slow Slushi Boys have no fear of comparison with Ike Turner. Just listen to their song “I can’t believe what you say”. And, what should we say about the hot Hammond-funk played by English band Sting Ray Davies & The Organites, a side project by Leight Gracie of Speedometer and Stoned Soul Picnic!!!???!! SoulShaker Vol. 3 (2006)

This series just keeps getting better and better — and this hard-hitting third volume may be the funkiest entry so far! The groove here is nearly all modern deep funk — of the Quantic, Daptone, Truth & Soul, and Tramp Records variety — served up with just a bit of the modder touches that used to grace Record Kicks in years back, but which have now mostly been replaced by grittier tunes that are very much in the best tradition of the JBs or The Meters! The cuts here are all current, but the production, instrumentation, and tight funky arrangements all make them sound like lost singles from the end of the 60s — plenty hard and heavy to please even the fussiest fan of the classics — with 12 gems that include “Ratpack” by Big Daddy Moochin, “Tired Feet” by Smoove, “Transcend Me” by The Bamboos with Alice Russell, “Pushin On” by Quantic Soul Orchestra with Alice Russell, “Move Move Move” by The Link Quartet, “La Valla” by Bronx River Parkway, “Aynotchesh Yerefu” by Budos Band, “Practice What You Preach” by Poets Of Rhythm, “Do It Right” by Sweet Vandals, “Take My Time” by Breakestra with Choklate, “Hi Fidelity” by Hi Fly Orchestra, an d”Who Told You” by The Soul Snatchers. ~ dustygroove.com

Funkshone - Shining

Genre: Funk, Soul

Funkshone are an original funk act from the UK created by musician, DJ and producer Mike Bandoni and musician and producer Nino Auricchio. Formed in 2006 Funkshone have recorded and released four 7 inch singles (45s), a 12″ single and a CD album on UK funk label ‘Skyline Recordings’. The first title Purification parts 1 & 2 has now become a deep funk classic amongst the global funk contingent. The world’s funk DJs immediately took to the Funkshone sound including DeeJay Random. Due to the popularity of the Funkshone sound, Mike formed the band in early 2007. The following 45s, Stop the Bus, Droppin’ and The Raw have all been met with popular and critical success from the deep funk fraternity. The band’s debut album Shining was released in 2008 in Europe and in Japan as an extended 16 track version. A video of Mike Bandoni drumming as Funkshone at the Brighton Hip Hop Festival in June 2007 before the band was formed can be found here. The message of Funkshone is simple: feel the groove and get into it. From James Brown and Funkadelic to Kool & The Gang and The Fatback Band, it’s all about the groove and ‘that’ sound. In an age where digital technology is fast becoming king, Funkshone try to offer a slice of yesterday for tomorrow with a deep funk sound. ~wikipedia.org.

Southside Rockers - Street Dance

Genre: Hip-Hop
